Mental Health Awareness Month: The Role of Transparency

Hi, my name is Janet Reuben Okon.
I am a Writer, Inspirational, Lifestyle, Health & Wellness Blogger and Human Anatomist.

Today, I will be your health and wellness blogger and educator and we will discuss the role of transparency in mental health.
Happy mental health awareness month!  🥳

2025 being my year of introspection has made me become more transparent about my work and life. Also, it has made me discover more of what aligns with my values, gifts, passion and purpose, and stay true to who I am.

I started this blogging journey with a transparent reflection of my life and I can’t believe this is where we are today 🥹❤️. There is no Art of True Zeal Blog without TRANSPARENCY ✨

When you hear the words, “transparent and transparency”, what comes to your mind?

To be transparent means to be open and honest.

Transparency implies openness, communication and accountability.

WHY PEOPLE STRUGGLE TO BE TRANSPARENT:
✨Regret
✨Past Trauma
✨Limiting Beliefs
✨Toxic Environment
✨Life challenges
✨It is seen as a sign of weakness.
✨They want to protect themselves from being hurt.
✨They are afraid of what others may think of them.
✨They want to please others by hiding their true feelings.
IF THIS IS YOU, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Transparency may not be the easiest thing to do but it is necessary to improve mental health.

What has brought me this far in my blogging journey is because of how honest I’ve been about my journey-the struggles, the pain, tears, happiness, joy and the in-between. Let’s discuss a particular blog post that I was deeply transparent about.

At the time I wrote this blog post, I was passing through ALOT 😭. There was so much going on this period that I kept storing in my heart. But when I decided to be honest with myself and share my story, a heavy burden was lifted. I felt light 🥹. Life felt so much better and this made me have the best experience in my final semester of university. Here’s the blog link:

💫Transparency makes you feel less lonely, have new experiences and better understand your problems.
💫Transparency makes you learn and develop more helpful ways of dealing with difficult feelings.
💫Transparency brings healing.
💫Transparency makes you resilient.
💫Transparency makes you discover and live according to your value, passion and purpose.
💫Transparency makes you live a fulfilling and healthy life.
💫 Being transparent is inspirational: It allows others to see that it’s ok not to be perfect. None of us are perfect. We have all faced challenges. When we have the courage and confidence to honestly share our story, it inspires others to build the courage and confidence to share their story as well.
💫It makes life authentic and genuine: When we go through life giving others the impression we never have struggles, we make others believe, especially the younger generations, that they have to be perfect or failure is the end of life. Growth occurs when we keep trying and not give up. As we keep discovering new things about ourselves and the world, we can take our lives to a new and exciting level.

One of the core reasons I’ve been able to grow Artoftruezeal Blog to what it is today is because of how transparent I’ve been about sharing my personal experiences. My friend told me this some days ago and it stuck with me: “You speak openly about your struggles, especially your mental health and despite the difficulties, you want to achieve this purpose God has given you (and I will in Jesus mighty name Amen)”. It got me thinking about how I’ve been transparent about my life journey for the past six years, which has led me to discover my purpose, gifts, talents, refine and share them with you. Wow, what a journey!

🎊Communication with God: Through speaking to God about how you feel, the struggles and wins in life, He opens your heart and mind to do the next step:
🎉Teachings: By reading books, listening and watching teachings, it builds you to become who you truly are through discovering your strengths, weakness, etc.
🎊Pray for the spirit of courage: It takes courage to be transparent. Also, recognize openly the courage it takes when someone speaks transparently.
🎉Experiences: Talk about your experiences openly with the people you trust, especially any challenge you face.
🎊Discernment: Discern what you want to say, how, when and who you would like to be transparent with.
🎉Keep an open mind: Be conscious of how you respond when others speak truthfully. Keep an open mind and leave judgment out of the equation. People remember how you respond (or don’t respond) and that has a huge impact on the direction of the conversation, and the overall relationship.
🎊Affirmations: You can say affirmations to yourself in the mirror, you can write post-it notes and place them around the house or you can say them to yourself in your mind alone. No matter your method, with time, affirmations will work to enhance your awareness of transparency, improve your mental health and even help you achieve your goals. This is a great way to stay grounded in who you truly are.
🎉Journaling: Journaling has made me to be more honest with myself and discover a lot about who I am.

🎊Share your light (gift, talent, purpose): As you continually share your light with the world, you will discover more about yourself and stay true to who you are.
🎉Talk to a therapist: Therapy can provide guidance and tools to help you navigate your emotions and communicate transparently with others.
🎊Practice what you’ve learned intentionally and consistently.
🎉Share this post with your parents, siblings, niece, nephew, cousin, aunt, uncle, grandparents, friends, colleagues, neighbour and strangers.
🎊Share your story: Do you know anyone who finds it difficult to be honest about their mental health? Let’s break the stigma around transparency and mental health through sharing our story. Please share your story below and let’s keep the conversation going. Thank you.

Being transparent about my mental health and life in general has transformed my life beautifully and I’m forever grateful 🥹❤️.

From being transparent, vulnerable and intentional about mental health to living a healthy life, this has been a great and fulfilling month of creating awareness about mental health. Thank you God! ❤️

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” -1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV
