Hi, My name is Janet Reuben Okon. I am a Writer, Inspirational, Lifestyle, Health and Wellness Blogger and Human Anatomist. Welcome to part 3 of my NYSC Camp Experience! I’m so happy!!!
In this blog post, I will share the key details about the SAED program and my SAED journey. I’m so excited! Let’s go! 🥳

SAED stands for Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, a program of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Nigeria. The program aims to equip corps members with vocational and entrepreneurship skills for business and self-employment. It involves training and access to funding opportunities.

On 14th June 2025, I had my first SAED lecture 🎉 If there’s one thing I miss dearly at NYSC Camp, it’s definitely SAED lecture 😂☺️

During our SAED lecture, they usually give a break between the lectures to shake off the sleep because it’s indeed boring. This video is from one of those days that I danced with my friend during the break. P.S.: That’s my tiny little pink water bottle beside me 🥰 SAED lecture and I were like best friends only when I had my popcorn 🍿 and pink water bottle 🧂with me 😂

My NYSC bunkie brought popcorn 🍿 to camp, which she prepared at home. She said she didn’t feel like eating it. So, instead of the popcorn going to waste, I got it and the popcorn served as my snack for SAED lectures. I know I was called the popcorn girl from platoon 3 with her pink water bottle 😂😂😂
You just know this can only be platoon 3 members 😭😂😂😂.

The way I screamed?! 😂😂😂😂😂
Finally, for our last SAED lecture, we were told to join a SAED group.
Guess the SAED group I joined? 🤭
TIE-DYE GROUP!!! 🥳🥳🥳
I know that’s right!
I made a summary of my notes and here are a few steps you can take to produce a tie-dye material (These are a few things I learned from the tie-dye lecture and practical):
Tie-Dye Lecture
Tie-Dye is a method of dyeing by hand in which coloured patterns are produced on fabric by gathering many small portions of materials and tying them tightly with yarns before immersing the cloth in the dye bath.
Tie-Dye is a textile form that uses various forms of art as a way to create unique designs on fabric.
Note: There’s no mistake in tie-dye.
Types (or Techniques) of Tie-Dye
✨Spiral or spin ✨Knots ✨Lines or stripes ✨Circles ✨Twisting
✨Pleating ✨Marbling ✨Splashing
Dyeing is the application of dyes or pigment on textile material such as textiles, yarns, fabric with a goal of achieving a particular colour.
Note: Any material containing 20% or more of polyester will not dye well.
Types of materials used for Tie-Dye:
✨Natural fiber (cotton) ✨Fabric
✨Protective work surface
✨Disposable glove ✨Yarns or threads ✨Dye bath ✨Measurement tape ✨Plastic bath ✨Stove
Chemicals used for Tie-Dye:
✨Caustic soda ✨Hydrosulphide ✨Salt (optional)
Note: Cotton dye is used for cotton material. Satin dye is used for satin material.
Measurement for chemicals:
🎉Hydrosulphide and caustic soda is 2:1
Processes of colour mixing and application on fabric:
🎉Gather your material or fabric
🎉Identification of colours
🎉Colour combination
Note: Start with the light colour e.g yellow and then, heavy color e.g navy blue.
🎉Soak the fabric in water
🎉Create designs or patterns on the fabric
🎉Apply the mixed dyes
🎉Apply the fabric to sit or to rest
🎉Air the fabric
🎉 Rinse and wash
🎉 Wear and enjoy.
Here’s a step-by-step process of making tie-dye on a shirt:
In these videos, our trainer uses different techniques to make tie-dye on a shirt.

Happy Tie-Dye Practical Day 🎉
We had a practical class where we tie-dyed our materials. For me, I used a white shirt for the tie-dye practical. Also, I applied the spiral and marbling tie-dye techniques.
Happy SAED closing ceremony and Tie-Dye Exhibition Day to us and all who celebrate 🥰🎉

NYSC has done it again 🥳

One thing about me? I must look good! 😍😍😍Remember, looking good is my business 🥰🤭
I wore my tie-dye shirt, white short and everything was 10/10. One thing about me? I love to wear the colour blue because it always looks so good on me 🥰🥰🥰. It’s the way blue colour just has a way of lightening up my mood 😂☺️

That’s my NYSC twin 🥰 We did our tie-dye practical together 😍😍😍

I was so happy because this is such a beautiful memory, one I will forever remember 💙

We snapped with our Tie-Dye Trainer and group members. We had such a good time 🥰

The SAED lecture and exhibition was truly a life changing experience for my career, education and life as a Nigerian youth. I gained the clarity and knowledge of knowing what I want to do in life and doing it. I’m forever grateful for this journey because it has evolved my mindset, opened my mind to the reality of being a youth in this country, and taught me how to make the best out of this one year of service in Nigeria.
If you ever intend to attend NYSC, you could think of the mindset evolution as a key benefit to your life and the world you aim to build for yourself.
Thank you for attending my SAED lecture and exhibition with me (part 3 of my NYSC camp experience). I love sharing my SAED journey with you and I hope you enjoy it much more than I did 🥰💃💃
Happy Weekend, My Artoftruezeal Family 🥳🥳🥳
Have you ever served as a corps member in Nigeria? Which state did you serve in?
How was your NYSC experience?
You’re welcome to share 💕
